Skeeter's risk in writing this book was minimal compared to Abileen's, but Skeeter doesn't realise it. Abileen and the other maids risked their lives and the lives of their families. Nobody was likely to lynch, burn or make it so Skeeter could never get another job. I love all the characters in the Help, and Skeeter was in an impossible position. Yes, that book needed to be written, but by writing it, she was risking every black maid's life. And the acting here is so beautiful you can see that terror on Abileen's face, and the enthusiasm on Skeeter's. When I wrote "The Privileged Few" - a dystopian novel where social engineering has reached a level where those historically oppressed are raised to elite level and those historic oppressors are given the lowest places, I have a scene where a white man is breaking the very draconian law to bring banned reading material to an important woman of colour. In it, these roles are reversed. If they're found out, his punishment will be so much worse than hers, evading the government is almost a game to her, to him, it's his life. Sometimes, you don't understand injustice until you're suffering it yourself.
I believe Elisabeth was hard on her daughter due to Mae Mobley’s weight, which is awful. I believe she took her fears, failures and resentments she felt for herself, out on her daughter which is awful. She neglected Mae because she wasn’t what Elisabeth deemed “perfect” which is simply heartbreaking 😞
Ugh Elizabeth was so spineless that she valued HILLY over her own two children. As sad as the ending was, I hope the two kids turn out to be like Skeeter: smart, kind and cherishing find memories of their time with people like Constance and Abileen.

Yes, Elizabeth is worker/fluffee bee. But Hilly needs Elizabeth as much as Elizabeth needs her. Elizabeth sees her world protected by the cruel strength of Hilly. If she feared her complety, she would not enjoy the counsel of her sage queen bee as much. Elizabeth respects and loves Hilly, but by no means sees her as an object of fear. No, what Elizabeth fears is her own world being destroyed. Her place is not as queen or leader, so to be comfortable, she must maintain and preserve the strength of the one who keeps her where she is comfortable. She fears the world, her role as a mother and reality, not Hilly. Hilly keeps her from facing the truth and Elizabeth wants that. To Hilly, Elizabeth is poor Elizabeth... Feel for her because she struggles. Elizabeth wants and needs that and in return she serves the needs of Hilly as a societal savior. Both women are symbiotic organisms essentially dependent on one another. Elizabeth allows Hilly to feel charitable without bending too far down... Hilly allows weak- willed Elizabeth to have the perception of strength without having to actually be strong. Examples of this are seen throughout the movie. One bejng this very scene. To some, Elizabeth is a sheepish servant beckoned as Hilly needs it. To me, Hilly provides the neutral, unpurposeful wallflower a sense of purpose, strength and position within a sphere of existance. She responds to the needs of her "master" as a loyal dog would, but imagine her "masters" response had she been indifferent. Would she retaliatr the way she did to the maids? How would that look to others if she did? Would she be hurt of Elizabeth didnt care. Hilly required the response of Elizsbeth to feed her ego, reassert her position in society now threatened and gratify her desire for what I call handmaiden elevation. Her equal friend betrayed her, grab the next best thing to feed the emotional hole left by that betrayal. Elizabeth's place is by no neans an equal, but a neutral buffer. This position and acceptance of such place can also be noticed by how uncomfortable she is when Hilly accuses the maid of stealing. Is Elizabeth scared of Hilly there, or is she scared that her comfortable life is changing? Notice that Abeline didn't once respond to her protest to stop, and Hilly ignored her comment that maybe the silver wasnt stolen. Elizabeth is their shield in battle, but inanimate and of no greater depth. Elizabeth, remaining neutral, sides with both, has no real opinion, waits for instruction from both strong forces and demonstrates no real personal idea on what to do. She clings to her child only as instructed and maintains the chaos of what is hsppening only for her own survival. Again, her fear is the fear of not having control of what she fears which is the unknown. Shes not a doormat by accident.... Shes a doormat out of necessity to maintain her status and by choice.

Oh that scene is just perfect and it is really quite suiting for Hilly she is wicked and mean and will do anything to get her way. So she has ever bit of it coming to her. I would say the moral of the story is to treat others the way you want to be treated.
